Spencer’s Officially A Teenager - Argh!!

Well, it finally happened, Spencer celebrated his 13th birthday on the 19th. He’s officially a teenager (I can’t believe it) and exhibiting signs of teenage communication (if that’s what you call it). I’ll settle for a grunt right now, or a roll of the eyes, or a, “Maaaaaam!” said in a sing-song, exasperated voice. Nana managed a couple of pictures.

As always, he was lavished with gifts. Nana took him to town on his birthday and treated him to breakfast, a pedicure (which he wasn’t really sure about until after he’d sat in the massage chair with his feet in a warm whirlpool for 45 minutes), and new clothes and shoes. He promply spent some of the money Auntie Gail gave while listening to tunes on his new iPod from mom and dad. Spoiled, spoiled, spoiled… And of course, he’d already spent the gift card from Auntie Cheryl when we were in town on Sunday. So, yes, he’s definitely a modern boy with modern tastes. I keep telling him it will be a rude awakening when he enters the work force and sees how much everything costs and has to earn it for himself. He’s learning that now after the fact while I gleen 50 hours of hard-labor in the yard as pay-back for his trip to Portland over Easter break!! Nonetheless, he’s still a good, loving boy with a great sense of humor, and an easy-going nature. Hope it all stays that way!! He cracked us up the other morning. Michael and I were talking about song writing, and how we feel God has blessed us with some worship songs, and how could we go about producing those songs, when all of a sudden Spencer pipes up with a very serious look on his face that he’d been blessed with a song too. Our heads snapped around and we both exclaimed at the same time with surprise, “What is it?!” He proceeded to put his hands to his mouth and mimed playing an instrument while making exact sounds of the Australian Digeree Doo. We all laughed ourselves silly. A little levity is always good for the soul. :o We’re having fun together!

Springtime in Shaver 2007!

Spring is finally springing in Shaver Lake and it’s sooooo glorious!

On my way to work yesterday morning, I was so taken with the blooming dogwoods that I ran out at lunch time and drove up and down the mountain and pulled my Jeep off the beaten track wherever possible (my first mini taste of the off-roading season) taking pictures of everything in bloom. It was fabulous! Being out in nature on a bright, sunny, Spring day, taking pictures of the blossoms, ridin’ in my Jeep (too bad the top’s not off yet), and the heady smell of the pines warmed by the Sun. Wow! I live and work here and I get to see this vista everyday going up and down the mountain. Awesome!!

The only thing that was missing was the right music. Years ago when we went to Yosemite camping, I road my bike all over the valley floor listening to a tape (shows you how long ago that was) I used to have entitled “Relax With The Classics - Largo.” The same native Pacific Dogwoods we have here were in full bloom during that camping trip, and driving up the mountain yesterday reminded me of that experience. There was a recording of a concerto for strings and two mandolins that I would play over and over again. What a great memory. So as I drove past stands of dogwoods, I kept hearing that symphony in my head. Of course I had to go online that afternoon and it took me forever to find a place that still sells copies of that series, but I did find them and purchased them on CD. I can’t wait to get the CD and upload the audio file (here it is for your listening pleasure! “Andante Molto from Concerto for Two Mandolins” by Antonio Vivaldi)  so you can listen to the mandolin concerto as you peruse these pictures of Shaver in bloom!

Enjoy!! ;)

To Spring or not to Spring…

…that is the question…

Here at 4,000 feet in the Sierra Nevada mountains, Mother Nature cannot decide whether to Winter or Spring…

A week ago we had over a foot of snow and it was below 20 degrees for over a week and didn’t go over 30 for the other week. Today it’s in the 70s! But I know Winter isn’t over yet because my little Almond tree is in the full bloom of glory, covered in white blossoms, the Apricot is almost in full bloom and the Peach and Nectarine are on their way…so sure enough, it will snow in a couple of weeks and we’ll go fruitless once again this year — argh (it seems to happen every year, and I even have late harvest fruit trees)!!

Up here, no matter how warm it gets, you do not plant until June 1st, so I have to pass by all the wonderful flower starts at the nurseries down below (big sigh)…

Last weekend Michael, Gwynneth, Gail and I went to a Graham Cooke conference in Vacaville. It was an absolutely beautiful weekend and we laughed and had fun together (sorry no pictures this time) and we were refreshed in the Spirit. The teaching and worship was incredible - that word doesn’t even capture it; it was life-changing, and fun!!!

So Spencer is really excited :) because he gets to go all by himself at Spring break and visit all his cousins in Portland. He’s counting the days and DRIVING ME NUTS!!! (It was cute when I got an email from Chloe saying, hey, I received this phone call from Spencer asking to come at Spring break and I told him he could and then thought maybe I’d better check with mom in case he was taking it upon himself to arrange the whole thing. She was worried he might be booking his flight next… I was there when he called and coaching him all the way.) Not sure if Spencer should pack warm or cool weather clothes…I guess we’ll just have to wait week-by-week…

Fay is also really excited ;) because she gets to go all by herself at Spring break to India. Can you believe that! I’m going with the Worship Institute; the folks we went on the cruise with in January. During the first week of April we’ll be doing an intensive week-long training for Indian pastors, worship leaders and worship teams. It truly is the trip of a lifetime. I’ve always wanted to go to India (it is one of my dreams to attain before I leave this Earth) and I get to do it doing the thing I love the most in the world and that is singing God’s praises! So excited doesn’t even come close to capturing how I feel. Actually I feel pretty puny right this minute, I’m having to catch up on four vaccinations and the Typhoid vaccine is getting to me with a bit of a reaction, so at work they’re calling me Typhoid Fay! Anyway, I won’t be wondering what clothes to pack because apparently the mean temperature, year round, day round, in India is around 80 with 90 or more percent humidity! Oh, I’m going to Mumbai, formerly Bombay. I still can’t believe it!!!

Now Michael isn’t such a happy :( camper right now, but maybe secretly he’ll enjoy his week alone??? Probably not, he likes having us around. I’m hoping everyone will rally round and keep him company while Spencer and I are out travelling the world and he’ll get some, “Hi, how ya doing!” phone calls while we’re gone.

So, lots of excitement at the Dennis abode. More fun travel and dream trips coming true…so stay tuned… :o
